U.S. Milk Production Sees Largest April Output Ever

Milk production in the United States during April totaled 18.3 billion pounds, up 2.0 percent from April 2016.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.44 billion pounds, despite being one of just five states with lower annual output. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year production as that state produced 1.02 billion pounds of milk in April, up 12.8 percent from the same month last year.

The number of milk cows on farms in the United States was 9.39 million head, 69,000 head more than April 2016, and 8,000 head more than March 2017.

Production per cow in the United States averaged 1,949 pounds for April, 24 pounds above April 2016.
