UN Resolution Creates World Pulse Day in February
USAgNet - 01/18/2019

"We are thrilled to start 2019 with the exciting news that the United Nations General Assembly passed a unanimous resolution declaring Feb. 10, World Pulse Day, beginning this year. Every year, on Feb. 10, we have the chance to create a surge in our worldwide promotional programs as part of a global effort to enhance consumption of U.S. dry beans," reported Rebecca Bratter, executive director of the U.S. Dry Bean Council (USDBC).

While this is part of the USDBC's everyday work, having a branded and formal occasion to celebrate together with our partners in the worldwide pulse industry will help us broaden our outreach and strengthen our messages. The declaration of World Pulse Day is a result of an initiative led by the President of Burkina Faso, H.E. Roch Marc Christian Kabore, with support from his cabinet and the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC).

Cindy Brown, president of Chippewa Valley Bean of Menomonie, Wis., and executive vice president of GPC emphasized, "As one of the few crops that has had both an International Year and now an Annual Day, GPC is honored that the UN General Assembly recognizes the many attributes that the pulse category, including dry beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas, bring to the world. Whether tackling hunger or sustainability, as a plantbased protein, pulses contribute to the health and nutrition of people and the planet."

Deon Maasjo, of Kelley Bean Company in Oakes, N.D., and president of USDBC emphasized, "2019 promises to be an exciting year for the U.S. dry bean industry and for pulses as we have several new initiatives planned and will have more chances to share our messages and our high-quality dry beans with the world."
