Dry Bean Harvest at Midway Mark

Dry bean harvest is in full swing in both North Dakota and Minnesota. According to Kelley Bean Company , Hatton, N.D., location manager Dean Nelson, the crop is running around average in the area.

Progress in dry bean production states, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, are as follows:

North Dakota - Harvest is at 55%, well ahead of 24% last year and equal to average.

Minnesota - Harvest is at 46%, well ahead of 18% last year, but behind 57% average.

Wyoming - Dry edible beans cut are 60%. Harvest is at 46%, ahead of 27% last year and 36% average.

Colorado - Dry edible beans cut are 56%. Harvest is at 12%, behind 15% last year and 25% average.

Nebraska - Harvest is at 62%, well ahead of 30% last year.

Michigan - Dry edible beans dropping leaves mature is 40%. Harvest has just begun at 8% complete.

Idaho - Harvest was 62% complete, ahead of 47% last year but behind 73% average.

Oregon - Harvest was 57% complete, behind 61% last year and 75% average.

Washington - Harvest was 73% complete, compared to 45% last year and 75% percent average.

According to Northarvest Bean Growers Association, Fargo, N.D., dry bean trading activity is steady and new crop values are being established, according to USDA's Weekly Market Review. North Dakota and Minnesota grower prices for pinto beans are $22 to $23 per cwt. Black bean prices range from $24 to $25 per cwt and navy beans at $26-27 per cwt. Light red kidney bean bids come in at $40 to $43 cwt and dark reds range from $38 to $44 cwt.
