Snow Stymies Michigan Harvest Progress
Michigan Ag Connection - 11/19/2019

Wintery weather continued to prevent farmers from harvesting row crops throughout much of State, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the Great Lakes Regional Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. There were 2.1 days suitable for fieldwork in Michigan during the week ending Sunday. Heavy snowfall and cold temperatures occurred throughout much of the Upper and Lower Peninsula.

Many acres of corn remain unharvested due to the unrelenting weather, and farmers expressed concerns that they won't be able to get to them until December. In the few fields that were able to be harvested, the estimated moisture content of the grain at harvest was 24 percent, showing no significant dry-down.

Little progress was made on the soybean harvest; the estimated moisture content of the grain harvested was seventeen percent. Reporters noted that the snow continued to make it difficult for any significant amount of fieldwork to be accomplished.

In the Thumb, the sugarbeet harvest came to a close. Yields were reported to be variable, with a high amount of sugar content expected.
