Wet Weather Creates More Michigan Harvest Delays
Michigan Ag Connection - 11/20/2018

There were 2.9 days suitable for fieldwork in Michigan during the week ending Sunday, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the Great Lakes Regional Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Most regions across the State experienced cold temperatures and high levels of precipitation. Some counties in the Upper Peninsula reported having up to six inches of snow on the ground. The wet weather resulted in more harvest delays across the State.

The corn harvest continued in dry enough areas. The moisture content of the grain harvested was twenty percent. Spotters noticed that crops in certain fields were beginning to show signs of damage as a result of the snow and wind.

The snow resulted in minimal progress statewide for the soybean harvest. However, in the few areas dry enough, the moisture content of the grain harvested was sixteen percent.

Some winter wheat fields were reported to be showing signs of stress due to freezing standing water. The cold weather has also caused some fields to have a poor emergence rate.

Other activities included the planting of cover crops where weather permitted.
