Youth Finds Biggest Sycamore; Diameter Measures 26 Feet

Since 1993, ReLeaf Michigan, a nonprofit tree organization, has challenged the public to find Michigan's largest living trees through its Big Tree Hunt contest. ReLeaf Michigan and its sponsors are pleased to announce the grand prize winners of the 2013-2015 contest.

-- Largest Tree Submitted by a Big Tree Hunter 16 years or older - 311" circumference entered by Dale Dellar and located in Harrisville, in Alcona County.

-- Largest White Pine (Michigan's state tree) - 136" circumference White Pine entered by Stephan Solberg and Victoria Everitt and located in Spring Lake, in Ottowa County.

-- Largest Tree Submitted by a Big Tree Hunter 15 year old or younger - 315" circumference American sycamore tree entered by Kindell Covey and located in Adrian, in Lenawee County.

These winners, along with the winners for the largest tree entered in each county and any trees entered that might be potential state champions, will receive a certificate and gift at a ceremony to be held Feb. 20 at Whiting Forest Visitor Center, 2303 Eastman Ave, Midland, MI 48640 near Dow Gardens from 1 to 3 p.m. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Potential state champion entries are forwarded to the Michigan Botanical Club Big Tree Coordinator for review and possible inclusion in the State Champion Tree List. These champions are considered for the National Register of Big Trees, a program of American Forests. Michigan has 28 registered National Champion Trees.

The Michigan Big Tree Hunt Contest is sponsored by ReLeaf Michigan, the Michigan Botanical Club and Foundation, Arboriculture Society of Michigan, Consumers Energy Foundation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Hunting for Michigan's big trees is a great excuse to go on an outdoor adventure. Contest forms will be available later in the year for the 2016-2017 contest.

ReLeaf Michigan is a non-profit tree organization with a mission to educate the public on the value of trees and the need to properly select, plant, and maintain them.
