McDonald's to Hire 11,000 for Busy Summer Season
Michigan Ag Connection - 05/18/2018

McDonald's and its and its independent franchisees will be hiring approximately 11,000 restaurant employees across Michigan to better serve customers during the busy summer season.

Applicants of all ages will be considered for employment, but a job at the fast food giant may be particularly appealing to prospective college students since McDonald's recently announced plans to allocate $150 million over five years to its Archways to Opportunity education access program.

The program increases the amount of college tuition assistance available, lowers eligibility requirements from nine months to 90 days of employment, and drops weekly shift minimums from 20 hours to 15 hours.

"Building a better McDonald's means recognizing we can help employees pursue and achieve their goals, both at McDonald's and beyond," said Erika Schulz, McDonald's owner/operator in Michigan in a statement.

"The changes in the Archways to Opportunity program mean that new employees who start in our restaurants this month could be eligible for tuition assistance and other Archways benefits by the time school starts again at the end of the season. That's a big deal, and I'm very proud of the opportunity that this presents to current and prospective employees."

The program provides nearly 400,000 U.S. restaurant employees with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront tuition assistance for college courses, access academic advising courses and learn English as a second language.

Eligible crew will also have access to $2,500 a year in tuition assistance and eligible managers will have access to $3,000 a year.

Archways to Opportunity has awarded more than $1.7 million in Michigan, since the program's inception in 2015.

More than half of the hires at company-owned restaurants are projected to be between the ages of 16 to 24 years old, and for many, it is their first job. Job seekers can visit McDonalds.com/careers to learn more and apply.
