Michigan Plants Record 2.15 Million Acres in Soybeans

Cool spring temperatures and wet fields delayed the start of planting until the second half of May for many Michigan producers. By Memorial Day weekend, conditions had improved to allow the planting of corn and soybeans to catch up to the average progress.

According to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office, Michigan corn growers planted 2.50 million acres, up 150,000 acres from last year and up 50,00 acres from the March Intentions report. Harvested acres of corn for grain were set at 2.16 million acres.

U.S. corn planted area for all purposes in 2015 is estimated at 94.1 million acres, up 7 percent from last year. This represents the third highest planted acreage in the United States since 1944. Growers expect to harvest 86.6 million acres for grain, up 7 percent from last year.

Michigan soybean growers planted a record high 2.15 million acres, up 120,000 acres from last year. Growers expect to harvest 2.14 million acres of soybeans in 2016.

U.S. soybean planted area is estimated at a record high 83.7 million acres, up 1 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 83.0 million acres, is also up 1 percent from 2015 and will be a record high, if realized. Record high planted acreage is estimated in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Winter wheat growers planted 600 thousand acres in Michigan, up 18 percent from 2015. Harvested acres of winter wheat for grain are anticipated to be 570 thousand acres, up 95 thousand acres from a year ago.

U.S. winter wheat planted area is estimated at 36.5 million acres, up 1 percent from the previous estimate but down 7 percent from last year. Acres harvested for grain is forecast at 30.2 million acres, up 1 percent from the previous forecast, but down 6 percent from last year.
