Michigan Winter Wheat Forecast at 42.5 Million Bushels

Michigan's 2018 winter wheat production is forecast at 42.5 million bushels, according to Marlo Johnson, regional director, USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Region. This report is based on conditions, as of July 1, 2018.

Some highlights of the Crop Production Report follow:

The Michigan winter wheat yield is forecast at 85 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from the previous year but down 5 bushels from the June 1 forecast. Forty-five percent of the wheat as of July 1 was mature, 19 points higher than the 5-year average of 26 percent. Crop condition at the start of July was rated 71 percent good to excellent.

Oat yield in Michigan is forecast at 59 bushels per acre, which if realized would be a 5 bushel increase from last year. As of July 1, 66 percent of the crop was headed, compared to 59 percent last year and a 5-year average of 72 percent. The crop was rated 79 percent good to excellent at the start of the month.

Nationally, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.19 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from the June 1 forecast and down 6 percent from 2017. As of July 1, the United States yield is forecast at 48.0 bushels per acre, down 0.4 bushel from last month and down 2.2 bushels from last year's average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre. The area expected to be harvested for grain totals 24.8 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 29, 2018, but down 2 percent from last year

United States oat production is forecast at 66.4 million bushels, up 34 percent from 2017. Growers expect to harvest 1.01 million acres for grain or seed, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 29, 2018, but up 26 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of July 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 65.8 bushels per acre, up 4.1 bushels from 2017.
