DNR to Repair to Oman Creek Boating Access
Michigan Ag Connection - 09/26/2016

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to begin repairs to the Oman Creek boating access site Oct. 3, depending on weather conditions.

The boating access site is located in western Gogebic County, several miles northwest of Ironwood, adjacent to Little Girl's Point County Park, just upstream from the mouth of Oman Creek at Lake Superior.

The boat launch was damaged significantly following devastating July storms that impacted the area.

"This site, which provides boaters and anglers access to Oman Creek and Lake Superior, is very popular with users," said Doug Rich, DNR western Upper Peninsula parks and recreation supervisor. "We're pleased to have received the approved permits we've been waiting for and are now able to begin working on this important boat launch repair project."

DNR staff recently secured the permits needed for the repair project from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

On July 12, flooding from storms that hit the western U.P. with as much as 11 inches of rain washed out much of the Oman Creek boat launch and parking area.

Work to be completed at the site includes reconstructing the boating access ramp and shoreline protective features and restoring the parking area. The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

Cost of materials for the work is estimated at $30,000 and will be funded through Gogebic County storm damage funding.
