Farmers Establishing Baseline of Investment with Organic Survey
Michigan Ag Connection - 02/05/2010
A number of organic farmers invested in their future by participating in the 2008 Organic Production Survey. This survey, which is a follow-on to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, is USDA's first ever, in-depth
look at organic farming in the United States.
"The Organic Production Survey is a direct response to the growing interest in organics among consumers, farmers, and businesses," said Secretary Vilsack. "This is an opportunity for organic producers to
share their voices and help ensure the continued growth and sustainability of organic farming in the United States."
"The Organic Production results presented today will start the charting of trends in organic agriculture and provides the only source of uniform, comprehensive data for every state in the nation," said Dave
Kleweno, director.
The results show many aspects of organic farming during the 2008 calendar year - from production and marketing practices, to income and expenses. The results also focus on operations that are currently
engaged in organic production, as well as those who are exempt and making the transition to organic agriculture.
"The results will help shape future decisions regarding farm policy, funding allocations, availability of goods and services, community development and other key issues," said Kleweno. "In addition, the
information can help producers make informed decisions about the future of their own farming operations."
Organic Production Survey results are available online at www.agcensus.usda.gov and in various publications to be issued by NASS. A special release focusing on the Michigan Organic Production will be
available in early March.
