Muskegon Awarded $1M Cleanup Grant for Windward Pointe
Michigan Ag Connection - 10/21/2016
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced a $1,000,000 grant for the City of Muskegon to address brownfield conditions at an abandoned paper mill site.
The grant will pay for the abatement of asbestos paint on the exterior of two exhaust stacks followed by demolition of the stacks at the former Sappi Paper Mill, located on the south shore of Muskegon Lake. Abatement and demolition will help facilitate the
Windward Pointe mixed-use development.
The new owner, Pure Muskegon, LLC, has made a substantial investment in acquisition of this 120-acre property, and is moving forward with the first phase of a multi-phase mixed-use redevelopment project. It is estimated that over the course of this massive
redevelopment project, between 25 and 200 jobs will be created with an investment of between $7 million and $200 million. This investment will result in a significant increase in the city and county of Muskegon's tax base.
The DEQ's Brownfield Redevelopment Program provides funding to local governments for environmental response activities on brownfield properties where redevelopment is proposed. Brownfield properties are vacant or abandoned properties with known or
suspected environmental contamination.
